Launched on 1st July 1997 by the Switch Card Scheme, the UK British Solo Debit Card was at that time one of the world's leading domestic payment systems. Like its sister card, the Switch Debit Card (now Maestro), Solo is a fully electronic debit card. Customers pay for everyday goods & services. Solo was initially launched deposit accounts, as well as by customers who did not qualify for a Switch debit card on current accounts.
Solo is issued to customers over the age of 11 and to customers over the age of 13 by National Westminster Bank (now part of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group) and by HSBC Bank (formerly Midland Bank) respectively as a multifunction cash card and are also issued to people with a bad credit history or who never had a bedit card. Solo's main rival is Visa Electron, and like Visa Electron, Solo cards require that all transactions acquire electronic authorisation from the issuing bank. Such authorisation will not be given if there are insufficient cleared funds in the cardholder's account. Funds are then put on hold for the transaction or transferred immediately. Solo is not as popular as Maestro, but has become more so during recent years.
Solo cards are linked to the Switch/Maestro processing system but some merchants differentiate between Solo and Switch through their numbering scheme to prevent under 18s from purchasing online. Due to their availability to minors, they can be used as a simple age-vetting mechanism.
Here is a listing of online casinos that will offer you the Solo Debit Card (by Switch Card Services) payment service for gambling online. For a description of this payment method, see below.

The number of places where cardholders can use Solo online is gradually increasing; this includes online gambling. Solo is available to UK customers only.
How Solo works Solocard.co.uk is convenient for purchases at the point of sale, via mail & telephone order and increasingly, over the internet. Solo can also be used to make cashback transactions.
Solo cards are swiped through the store's terminal or dipped in a card reader. Each and every transaction is sent to the card issuer for authorisation, as well as to check for lost or stolen cards. Once the card issuer has confirmed that the cardholder has sufficient funds in his account, the transaction can proceed. The amount of the transaction is normal deducted from the cardholder's account one or two days later.
